Harpley Equestrian Cold Therapies- Information

Cold treatment draws blood to the area, promoting healing and the removal of toxins.  It assists with the reduction of swelling, aids in pain relief and soothes tired and over worked limbs.

While often riders use ice in the treatment of tired legs, recent research suggests that the optimum temperature for effective cold treatment is 4 degrees C- ice is therefore too cold and can cause damage, burns or prevent healing by restricting blood flow.  Harpley Equestrian's Cool Legs offer an easy and convinent leg treatment option within this temperature range.

Harpley Equestrian Cool Legs also feature elastic fitting straps to ensure a safe fit, with some support and compression also offered to the limbs.

How to use:

1.  Soak Cool Legs in cold water for around 60 minutes, but no more than 2 hours maximum. The boots will take on the temperature of the water, so if you have ice available either add this to the water to chill further, or once soaked, keep the boots in an esky with ice to chill.

2.  Apply to your horses legs after strenuous exercise (polo, cross country, showjumping, endurance, racing etc).  Applying to wet legs will assist with the transfer of heat away from the horse's legs.

3.  Use for 20 minutes on, and 20 minutes off, repeating as often as you see fit.  The boots will retain their temperature and usefulness for hours after the initial soaking.  You can use them to treat the front and back legs.

4.  Do not turn out your horse when wearing the boots.  Have your horse either tied up or restricted in a small yard to prevent damage to the boots.

5.  Do not over soak the boots- over soaking will allow gel to leak out of the boots and reduce their lifespan.

6.  Do not apply Cool Legs to open wounds.

7.  Do not freeze Cool Legs.

8.  Lie flat to dry out (depending on weather may take a few days to completely dry out again) and store in the bag provided ready to use again and again.  Do not machine wash, or wring out.
